The former Stockport, Motherwell and Peterborough boss signed an 18 month contract to replace the departed Micky Adams as Vale manager.

Gannon made his name as an uncompromising centre half for County during the early 1990s, before cutting his managerial teeth with the club.

He achieved promotion from League Two with the Hatters, before spells with Motherwell and The Posh.

Gannon joined the Valiants after Micky Adams left to take over his boyhood team Sheffield United.

Sacked in March 2011 following a disatorous 74 days in charge. Gannon managed to alienate practically everyone at the club during his short stay and lost his job after a chaotic 3-0 defeat at Accrington Stanley, when the Irishman needed to be smuggled out of the ground.
