Super sub Ben Williamson`s late winner ensured that Forest Green Rovers were not added to the list of non-league sides to dump the Valiants out of the FA Cup. Despite taking a two goal lead inside 12 minutes, Vale were somewhat fortunate to escape from The New Lawn with the victory after being forced onto the back foot for much of the second half. After slow starts in recent games, Vale came out of the blocks quickly and were rewarded when Ashley Vincent poked home from close range for his sixth of the season. Minutes later a rare goal from the returning Clayton McDonald appeared to have put Micky Adams` side into cruise control. However, the Conference side hit back with goals from the impressive James Norwood and Eddie Oshodi.
Adams responded by making a double change. Captain Doug Loft`s welcome return from injury gave Vale some fresh impetus down the left hand side, while Williamson continued his recent knack of scoring important goals when heading home Vincent`s corner within minutes of his introduction. Vale will eagerly await this afternoon`s second round draw, only a game away from a potential money spinning draw against one of the Premier League`s big boys. Adams, meanwhile, was just happy to earn the win, despite seeing his side not at their best. "I wasn't comfortable with our performance at the back. I thought we dropped too deep in the second half. It was too easy for their centre forward to get balls into his feet. However, with a makeshift back four that's not played together all season I'm happy. To be in the second round draw is all that matters, not how we played".
