Battling Bulls Deny Vale

Hereford United
1 - 1
Port Vale

Edgar Street

Attendance: 2651

Vale missed an opportunity to extend their lead at the top of League Two as bottom side Hereford survived for 65 minutes with only ten men after goal scorer Sean Canham was sent off. Marc Richards`s ninth goal of the season levelled matters, but the Valiants could not force a winner despite some excellent second half opportunities.

Micky Adams made a number of changes from the midweek game at Carlisle, although only one alteration from the side that played at Oxford last week. Skipper Tommy Fraser made way for on loan winger Jemal Johnson, who earned his first league start for the Vale. Vale lined up with Tomlinson, Yates, McCombe, Owen, Collins, Johnson, Griffith, Roberts, Rigg, Richards and Richards.

It was Marc Richards who came close to the game`s opening goal, but his close range strike was ruled out for offside. Not long after, it was the Bulls who took a surprise lead. The former Exeter City striker, Sean Canham, converted James McQuilkin`s set piece for his second goal of the campaign.

It wasn`t long before Vale restored parity. Justin Richards was upended by Canham, the goal scorer receiving a straight red card and Marc Richards coolly slotted home the resulting spot kick.

Vale were indebted to keeper Stuart Tomlinson shortly afterwards when Griffith was penalised for tripping Werling, the former Barrow man pulling off a fine save to keep out Bauza`s penalty.

Hereford withstood Vale pressure in the second half, Bartlett making an excellent save low down to thwart Dodds, but the home side could have taken the points when Tomlinson turned Bauza`s shot onto the post.

With Vale failing to win any of their last three games, the lead has been cut to one point, and Adams will be looking for a vast improvement ahead of next Saturday`s fixture against a Gillingham side that possesses an appalling away record.
