Vale Boss Thrilled With Walsall Win

Vale boss Micky Adams was a happy man after seeing his side end a remarkable run which had seen them fail to win at Walsall since 1947.

More importantly, was the professional response after Vale`s disappointing performance in midweek against 10 men Preston North End. While that game demonstrated that the Valiants are still some way short of the top sides in the division, the victory at the Banks`s Stadium leaves Adams` side in 8th spot-the highest position Vale have occupied since 2006.

Well-taken goals either side of the interval from Tom Pope and Gavin Tomlin made it six wins in eight games. Adams was impressed with his side`s defensive display, including that of debutant goalkeeper Sam Johnson. "We smashed this hoodoo, though I don't believe in them.

"It's about 11 lads going out and performing. I was as committed hard-working performance as I've seen for a long time.

"Walsall are a good side if you let them play, but we didn't allow them to do that. I told the boys before the game that over our dead bodies would we concede a goal, and I thought our back four were excellent.

"We class Walsall as one of the teams that will be there or thereabouts come the end of the season. If we finish above them we shall have had a good campaign."

Vale host Conference side Salisbury City on Friday night (7.45pm) aiming for a potentially lucrative spot in the FA Cup Third Round draw.
