Adams Thrilled With Vale Response

Vale boss Micky Adams was delighted with the response from his players as his side recorded their first win of the season against Bradford City yesterday. Goals from Lee Hughes and Captain Doug Loft gave the home side a deserved victory.

Adams admitted that he got his team selection and system wrong at Colchester, and reverted to his tried and trusted 4-4-2 formation, which meant a first start for summer signing Kaid Mohamed as well as recalls for Adam Yates, Jennison Myrie-Williams and Lee Hughes.

Despite a nervy end to the game, Adams was happy to see his players react positively to the criticism aimed at them last week. "I am absolutely delighted. Straight from the off I thought we showed our effort and commitment and willingness to work for each other.

"We stuck our bodies on the line, which you have got to do against a good Bradford side and the commitment was there for everybody to see.

"It was particularly nice after I had questioned them last week and to get a response like that was first class."

The Vale boss reserved special praise for Hughes, who continued his fine goal scoring record since arriving in the Potteries. Despite scepticism surrounding the signing among supporters both for footballing and non-footballing reasons, Adams stated that the former West Bromwich Albion striker had been nothing but a positive influence on the club. "I brought the old man Hughesy back in and I have to say what a fantastic performance from him, he epitomised everything that was good about us today.

"Since he has been at this football club he`s been a real man. I know there are things in his past which I can`t deal with and he has had to deal with, but since he has been at this football club he has been an absolute credit to himself."

Hughes will return to one of his former clubs next week as Vale travel to Oldham Athletic in search of back to back wins going into a massive game with Staffordshire rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers.
