Vale Name Retained List

Vale boss Micky Adams has rewarded the vast majority of the squad that secured promotion to League One.

Four players have been released- Darren Purse, Kingsley James, Clayton McDonald and Calvin Andrew. None of those four comes as a huge surprise. Despite playing in the majority of games since his arrival from Plymouth Argyle, to step up a division at the age of 36 is clearly one too far at this stage of his career. Both James and McDonald have been out on loan at Hereford United and Bristol Rovers respectively over recent months, while Andrew has struggled to cement a place in the first team.

Two year deals have been offered to Doug Loft, Daniel Jones, Ben Williamson, Sam Johnson, Ashley Vincent and what may come as a surprise to some, Sam Morsy, who has struggled to regain his spot in the side over the second half of the campaign.

Louis Dodds and Adam Yates have been offered one year extensions with the option of a second year, while Liam Chilvers and Chris Birchall have been offered one year deals. Lee Hughes automatically gets a further year as a result of promotion.

Adams told the Official Site

"This has been an exceptionally hard decision, especially after the season we have had.

"I would like to thank every single one of our players for the contribution they have made. These decisions are the hardest part of management and it is something I have thought long and hard about."

The Vale boss has shown admirable loyalty to his players who deserve the chance to impress at a higher level. However, there is little doubt that the Vale will need 5 or 6 high quality replacements to replace those released in order to compete.

We wish all of those released the very best for the future.
