Vale boss Micky Adams was delighted with his side`s character as the Valiants hung on for a hard fought win at Bradford, ending the Bantams one hundred per cent home record in the process. Tom Pope`s 37th minute winner, capitalising on a poor header from Gary Jones, kept Vale in second place. Adams made two changes to the side that lost to table topping Gillingham last week, bringing in Rob Taylor at left back and Ryan Burge in central midfield alongside Captain Doug Loft who was restored to his favoured position. Despite being second best for long periods, Vale hung out and recorded a rare clean sheet in the process. "It was a welcome three points. Whether we deserved the win or not is debatable.
"In terms of character to a man, they`ve stood their ground and we`ve managed to scrape the three points.
"To come away with a 1-0 result, I feel like I`ve been into the sweet shop and nicked a few sweets."
The result sees Vale sit three points behind leaders Gillingham going into Tuesday`s game against Dagenham and Redbridge, who themselves enjoyed a comprehensive victory over managerless Wycombe.
