The Valiants continued their impressive start to the season with a convincing 2-0 win over League One pace setters Tranmere Rovers in the JP Trophy. A brace from winger Jennison Myrie-Williams, the first a spectacular free kick, helped to book Vale`s spot in the second round draw. Following a traumatic summer, which saw Keith Ryder`s takeover fail to materialise, many supporters had little hope of a successful campaign on the pitch. Although the season is very much in its infancy, performances have been of high enough quality to suggest that, although still light of a genuine goalscorer, there may well be something for fans to look forward to. The arrival of Steve Evans` big spending Rotherham United on Saturday may give a better indication of the true strength of Vale`s credentials. Other than an undeserved loss at Accrington Stanley, performances and results suggest that the unpopular Scot and his side will more than meet their match in the Potteries.
Vale boss Micky Adams was happy with his side`s performance, although sounded a note of caution. Speaking to The Sentinel Adams stated, "At times we looked very, very good.
"Let's not kid ourselves, Tranmere were missing some good players, but you can only beat what's in front of you.
"I was pleased with how we were playing even at 0-0 at half-time and their keeper made a couple of good saves.
"It's another clean sheet, which will give confidence to the keeper and the back four.
